Funding Crisis

On February 9, 2011, the House Appropriations Committee released initial details of a proposal that would fund federal government through the rest of the fiscal year. The proposal includes a COMPLETE ($327 million) elimination of Title X funding, and significant cuts to other programs that support community health. This proposal is expected to be voted on in the House this week.
It is absolutely imperative that your Members of Congress hear from you TODAY about how devastating these cuts would be to family planning and reproductive health care in Missouri.
Listed below are a few key talking points when communicating with Members of Congress:

• Title X is one of the only programs with a return on investment – Health care centers receiving Title X funds not only provide quality health care services, but also save the government money. Every dollar spent through Title X funding saves $3.74 in pregnancy-related and newborn care costs to Medicaid.
• There is widespread public support for expanded access to contraception: 89 percent of the voting public is in favor of public funding for family planning services.
• Title X is a success story: The best advancement in 40 years of public health. Title X provides education and crucial preventive health care services to the underserved. This may be the only health care some receive.
• Missouri’s Title X network provided services to 69,077 people in 2010.

Eliminating Title X would be devastating to the health care infrastructure of our state and would cause Missouri to suffer the loss of approximately 346 jobs state-wide. WHS asks that every delegate act today to show their support for Title X and to voice their concerns about these cuts.
