Early detection and treatment are key when dealing with this disease. The current survival rate for women in the U.S. is 90%, but that percentage jumps to 99% if the cancer is caught early and remains confined to the breast. Women over age 40 should receive annual clinical breast exams, as well as annual mammograms, to better their chances of overcoming a breast cancer diagnosis. If you are between the ages of 20 and 39 try to schedule exams at least every three years, or more often if you think you might be at high risk of developing breast cancer. Do not ignore the common signs and symptoms of breast cancer, which may include swelling or lumps in the breast or under arm area, as well as changes in color, shape, or size of the breast; also be sure to take note of any feelings of pain or warmth in particular areas.
Help Green Hills Women’s Health Services raise awareness of breast cancer this month. If you, or a loved one, have not yet scheduled your annual checkup, take a moment right now to do so. Urge the women in your life to visit with a health practitioner about breast cancer and how they can reduce their risk and remind your friends just how important early detection can be.
Green Hills Community Action Agency’s Women’s Health Services Program offers clinical breast exams and cervical cancer screenings as just a small part of the wide array of services provided. The WHS program also offers referral services for those seeking mammograms or further information about breast cancer. Show Me Healthy Women is a program offered through WHS. SMHW is funded through the Center for Disease Control, and when a woman has been determined eligible, all services are free to the patient. Services offered include clinical breast exams, pap smears and mammography. To qualify, a woman must be over 50, meet income guidelines, provide proof of income, license or picture ID, (such as last year’s tax document), and she cannot have insurance, Medicaid or Medicare.
On-site clinics are available at locations in Caldwell, Carroll, Chariton, Grundy, Harrison, Linn, Livingston, Putnam, and Ray counties for women of all ages and income levels.
